Many solutions are available to the MPLS Network Architect to provide high resiliency to minimize traffic loss in the event of failure. Some solutions have taken the form of software extensions to existing protocols, such as Fast Reroute and Graceful Restart, and hardware solutions, such as SONET APS. New solutions for stateful failover within a single Label Switch Router, such as Non-Stop Routing and Composite Links, provide node and link protection with lower operational complexity. This presentation will examine Non-Stop Routing and Composite Links including functional operation, design tradeoffs, implementation challenges, and the network advantages when deployed alone or with other protection mechanisms.
