Gary Leonard, Riverstone Networks "MPLS: The Missing Link For Delivering Metro Ethernet and ATM Services"

Abstract:

ATM is widely deployed by service providers as it offers a proven and reliable way to support very large multi-service networks. However, Ethernet has emerged as viable high-speed access technology and has a clear cost advantage over ATM. This presentation explores how service providers can maximize profits from existing ATM networks while seamlessly migrating to Ethernet and ATM services over MPLS With Ethernet services gaining momentum for Access and Aggregation, MPLS provides carriers investment protection and one of the fastest ways to introduce a range of value-added Ethernet services such as Layer 2 VPNs alongside existing ATM services. To offer these new Ethernet services, service providers need to complement their network infrastructure with more flexible MPLS/IP networks. Using Ethernet, ATM, and MPLS to deliver value-added services and legacy connectivity, service providers can increase revenue per subscriber by tailoring services and bandwidth quickly and economically for each individual customer.

This presentation will explore:
§ Existing ATM and IP networks
§ How to deliver new MPLS based services at the edge
§ How service providers can leverage their ATM networks while migrating to new Ethernet based services
§ How service providers can off-load some of their ATM traffic to MPLS/IP
§ How service providers can integrate MPLS/IP networks with existing ATM networks to introduce new value-added services, such as virtual private Networks and Virtual Private LAN Services
